The Royal Mint has shared the first glimpse of its coin design in its new Star Wars collection. It has featured the characters of the original Star Wars trilogy for the first time on official U.K. coins, including the nation’s most collectible coin, the 50p.
The images of R2-D2 and C-3PO are the first to feature as part of the four-coin collection. Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, and Han Solo, and Chewbacca will be featured in other coins. Star Wars enthusiasts will be delighted to know that the Royal Mint’s Star Wars Collection offers an original twist.
Rebecca Morgan, director, of collector services, at The Royal Mint, said the Star Wars collection celebrates the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. “We are excited to enthuse new and exciting coin collectors across the world, as well as Star Wars’ thriving fan base both in the United Kingdom and internationally, with the launch of this collection.” Morgan said the collection features beloved character duos from the Star Wars franchise.
The Royal Mint worked tirelessly and faithfully to recreate the icon R2-D2 and C-3PO – the first Star Wars characters to feature on coins in the collection. Each coin in the Commemorative Coin Collection features a lenticular feature, which tilts in the light to reveal symbols – Tatooine and the Rebel Alliance Starbird logo.
The images and designs were achieved through an advanced picoseconds laser.
