“Is It Even a City” – Oslo’s New Tourism Ad is Brilliant with Dry Humor and Reverse Psychology

Oslo has banged right on with its sarcastic anti-ad tourism video that questions the status Norway’s capital. With a dose of humor and dry digs here and there, the ad campaign has played on the right strings and captivated audiences across the world.

The ad video, which draws inspiration from Danish-Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, features a 31-year-old local who says I wouldn’t come here. He says there are no lines at museums, no waits at restaurants – “Everything is just so available”. He also questions Oslo being even a city!

Anne-Signe Fagereng, director of marketing for Visit Oslo, highlighted that Oslo is an underdog as far as city break destinations go both in Europe and in the Nordics. “The fact is that it’s not as famous and crowded as some other capital cities is something we should start highlighting as a benefit.” The executive added that Oslo has been through an incredibly positive transformation over the last few decades. “So it’s time our confidence in our capital catches up with reality.”

Oslo is ready to boost its tourist numbers amid European cities hiking up fees for tourists and discouraging them from visiting. Norway doesn’t seem to mind tourists and is welcoming them with open arms.
