Northumberland Zoo Deadpan Social Media Video is Just Gen Z

A 60s-something couple is the star of the latest social media video for Northumberland Zoo in England. Linda and Brian Bradley look straight into the camera, no boring commentary, just the animals and them.

Maxine Bradley, the couple’s daughter who directed the video, said it was a one-of-a-kind. She thought it would be awesome, just to be direct…deadpan. Maxine shared that they drew inspiration from the Edinburgh Zoo video. “I don’t like TikTok and social media does my head in, but another member of staff who’s super into trends saw it too and we both said ‘We have to do this’.”

But Maxine and her colleague Lucy, both millennials, didn’t have it easy. They didn’t understand Gen Z. Maxine said Lucy understood it a bit and found lots of definitions and things on the internet. And they brought their heads together for a script, and eventually pulled in another colleague who was, of course, Gen Z.

“She understood it and was able to say ‘You can’t use that, it’s too old…Yes, this is on trend’,” Maxine said. “She was teaching my dad what you’re supposed to do and how you’re supposed to do it.” The young creative highlighted that it was a frustrating process filming it, but her parents were into it. “The one-minute video took two hours and my dad just wasn’t paying attention,” she shared. “Neither of them knew what they were saying.”

Maxine pointed out that she still doesn’t know how she got it done.

The Northumberland Zoo social media video has aced Gen Z through impactful (factual) storytelling with real people.
