Virgin Atlantic has partnered with Gladiators star Jodie Ounsley and the twins – content creators Hermon and Heroda Berhane. They are deaf and help the airline better understand the needs of its customers who lack the power of hearing. This is part of Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to ensuring their customers have a positive and inclusive travel experience.
Jodie Ounsley, Hermon, and Heroda Berhane tested the airline’s services on a flight from London Heathrow to Washington. It should be noted that Virgin Atlantic is the only UK airline that offers British Sign Language (BSL) trained cabin crew.
The Gladiators star shared that she didn’t feel confident enough, until recently, to fly on her own. “Knowing that airlines like Virgin Atlantic can provide specially trained crew with the awareness and understanding to make me feel comfortable onboard is really empowering,” she said. “It’s amazing to see the feedback myself, Hermon and Heroda provided is going to help make the experience of flying even better for deaf travelers in the future.”
Ounsley revealed that she cannot hear without her cochlear implant. “Things like increasing the availability of accessible movies and TV will mean I can enjoy more entertainment onboard.” Hermon and Heroda described their experience on Virgin Atlantic as surreal to be understood. They were able to communicate their requirements and needs.
Emma Flanagan, Virgin Atlantic BSL trained cabin crew, said making all passengers feel included and empowered at every stage of the flight is a key part of their role as cabin crew. “Being able to go that one step further and do this in BSL for passengers is hugely rewarding, from ensuring everyone feels welcome, to assisting with announcements, to helping them to experience the full warmth and joy of a Virgin Atlantic journey.”
