A Fresh Identity for a Modern Mission

Emphasizing its commitment to the public interest, Mozilla’s president Mark Surman states, “Since open-sourcing our browser code over 25 years ago, Mozilla’s mission has been the same – build and support technology in the public interest.” Recognizing that many users were unaware of the full scope of its offerings, Mozilla collaborated with DesignStudio to craft a new brand strategy, aptly named “Reclaim the Internet.”

The newly unveiled visual identity, designed by the UK and US teams at Jones Knowles Ritchie (JKR), is a reflection of Mozilla’s ethos as “not your typical tech brand.” The goal was to create a robust yet flexible identity that resonates with both formal audiences and the grassroots community. This approach allows Mozilla to showcase its innovative spirit while remaining approachable to everyday users.

A New Logo that Breaks the Mold

At the heart of Mozilla’s rebranding is a fresh logo that moves beyond its historical association with Firefox. The updated wordmark features a new typeface, with a striking uppercase “M” that not only stands out but also serves a deeper purpose. This “M” has been rotated 90 degrees to create a flag motif, symbolizing Mozilla’s role as a flagbearer for a more open and accessible internet.

The logo also includes a playful nod to its roots: a dinosaur design inspired by the beloved Mozilla T-Rex mascot, originally crafted by artist Shepard Fairey. The logo cleverly incorporates a pixel displacement to form the dinosaur’s eye, creating a unique visual identity that sets Mozilla apart in the crowded tech landscape.

The new identity is further enriched by an array of typefaces, including Mozilla Semi-Slab—an evolution of the previous slab typeface—alongside Mozilla Sans and Mozilla Sans Text. This thoughtful typographic approach distinguishes Mozilla from other tech brands that often lean towards sans-serifs.

Moreover, the color palette includes both black and white options, as well as a vibrant green version, contributing to a cohesive and memorable brand presence. With ASCII-style motifs and simple graphics inspired by the flag, Mozilla is poised to connect with its diverse audience, ranging from grassroots coders to government officials advocating for internet safety.
