New Orleans has long been known for its vibrant culture and cuisine, but the city is now shifting towards a more sustainable future. They have started an impactful initiative called ‘Keep It Clean NOLA’. The initiative, formed as part of 80 New Orleans organizations gathered to learn about ways to shift the narrative from New Orleans being known for waste to instead being known for community and culturally-driven sustainable actions. Let’s take a closer look at this campaign.
Love Your City Platform: Facilitating Conversations
To support the transition towards sustainability, the Love Your City, a platform that aims to support businesses in New Orleans with a no-cost opportunity to become more sustainable, was authorized. From green infrastructure improvements and composting to biodegradable glitter management, Love Your City facilitates conversations and brings the community together to make these changes easier for businesses to implement. Restaurants, manufacturers, hotels, and more can set sustainability goals and earn badges in Energy, Water, and Zero Waste categories. These badges are promoted on an Impact Directory that connects conscious consumers to purpose-driven companies.
Impactful Changes
One hotel, in particular, has made significant changes in the energy and waste categories and has saved a lot more money. Nathalie Jordi from Hotel Peter & Paul said, “Our hotel saved money while having a stronger impact on the local community. I did it because I believed in it – but it turned out to be a really smart business decision with thousands of dollars in savings.”
