Samsung is set to add generative artificial intelligence technology to Bixby, the brand’s voice assistant which was introduced with Samsung’s Galaxy S8 smartphone. Bixby is available in Samsung’s smart devices like smartphones, smartwatches, and other appliances. The company describes the voice assistant as a key tool for users to control their devices.
As AI advances, Samsung is looking to infuse its devices with more advanced features. Won-joon Choi, executive vice president at Samsung’s mobile business, highlighted last month that Bixby has been a key voice assistants voice assistant for Samsung devices – TVs and digital applications that exist in the brand’s ecosystem.
“So it has been the core voice assistant, assistant so far. With the emergence of generative AI and LLM (large language model) technology, I believe that we have to redefine the role of the Bixby, so that Bixby could be equipped with generative AI and become smarter in the future. This will enable a more natural conversation and to work out an interface that supports the Samsung products in our ecosystem.”
Junho Park, Samsung VP and Director of Global Product Planning, said they are deeply developing this generative AI stuff. “For example, speaking through wireless earbuds is a good way to communicate. It doesn’t require any screen, so it’s a good place for generative AI. There are many things that can initiate generative AI and we’re deeply collaborating on how to make a consistent generative AI through Galaxy Watch, earbuds, smartphone,s and tablets. We’re working on tangible solutions.”
