McDonald’s Set for a Spinoff ‘CosMc’s’ With Own Unique Personality

The World’s favorite fast food brand McDonald’s has embarked on a spinoff restaurant chain called CosMc’s, a character that appeared in its adverts in the 80s. This will be a small format concept with all the DNA of McDonald’s but with its own unique personality.

Chris Kempczinski, McDonald’s CEO, said CosMc was a McDonaldland mascot who appeared in advertisements in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. “CosMc is an alien from outer space who craves McDonald’s food.” It’s McDonald’s lesser-known character that has six arms and relocated from his home in space when he discovered McDonald’s burgers and fries.

The 80’s commercial features a UFO-like object landing in McDonaldland, then sprouting a head and six arms and saying “Hi-ho Earth people, CosMc here. I popped in from outer space on a trade mission.” There’s another ad that features Ronald and CosMc traveling through space together and crossing the Milky Way to order a Happy Meal at the “fly-through”. CosMc also featured in the 90s Nintendo game M.C. Kids with another McDonaldland character Hamburglar.

Kempczinski revealed the company will test CosMc’s in a handful of sites in limited geography in early 2024. This branding move follows the return of Grimace, McDonald’s mascot, whose limited-time purple shake became a viral sensation and bolstered the chain’s US business in recent months. The CosMc project details were shared during the fast food giant’s second-quarter earnings call.
